Editor’s Notes: Taking a three-year hiatus from runway collections, Mowalola Ogunlesi shifted focus to more artistic endeavors like her NOW Gallery exhibition and momentary tenure at YEEZY GAP.
Now, her eponymous label is back, coming in sizzling hot with its first runway collection following that brief intermission.
For its Spring/Summer 2023 presentation, Mowalola explored the “typologies of robbers” — hence the collection’s name, “Burglarwear” — through her brand’s “brazen raunch” design language, as stated in a press release.
Mowalola mastered the art of sensuous Y2K dressing, sending tailored lowriders, skin-tight micro mini skirts, and crucifix-embossed dresses down the runway.
And what better way to capture the spirit of the aughts than with a New Balance collaboration featuring a sneaker model inspired by the footwear brand’s famed ’00s runners?
During the Paris Fashion Week spectacle, Mowalola unveiled first looks at her futuristic New Balance 90/60 sneaker, dressed in Zenon-esque black/purple/yellow and black/teal/pink colorways.
The relatively-new New Balance 90/60 boasts a leather and mesh upper resting on a chunky ABZORB midsole, offering an athletic yet tech-focused look.
It’s also worth mentioning the 90/60’s bold design borrows elements from the New Balance 860, a beloved early 2000s sneaker.
As a Y2K-inspired shoe, the New Balance 90/60 poses as a heaven-made match for Mowalola, whose embodiment of the era’s daring essence partly catalyzed the craze’s resurgence.
