It’s official: football kits are back – and they’re better than ever.

While traditionalists will wax lyrical about the Hummel and Umbro kits of the nineties, or those wavy Nike kits from the 2002 World Cup (think Ronaldo scoring against Germany in the final), as the blurring of the lines between fashion and football continues, kits are only getting better. It’s a fact.

In recent years, teams like Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus (amongst others) have famously teamed up with Jordan Brand and Palace respectively, with smaller clubs like Venezia FC dropping arguably two of the cleanest jerseys now two seasons in a row.

Now let us throw another duo of looks into the mix, courtesy of Parisian outfit Red Star FC, who tapped Dutch label Lack of Guidance to design their Kappa home and away kits for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

Inspired by ultra minimalism and an old school soccer aesthetic, Lack of Guidance opted for the less is more approach for both the home and away kits.

“At first, we didn’t know too much about Red Star FC,” Akaar Amin, co-founder of Lack of Guidance, tells Highsnobiety. “We knew that it was a cult club, like everyone else that knows a thing or two about football.”

“As soon as we began to dig deeper, we came to the realization that the club fits our own DNA really well. I’ve had a football jersey obsession ever since I can remember and it felt like a dream come true to finally be able to design one ourselves.”

Officially the fourth oldest football club in France having been founded by the epochal Jules Rimet in 1897, Red Star FC hasn’t featured in Ligue 1 since the 1974-75 season yet still holds a cult-like status across European football thanks to its distinctive social culture. Now it holds two good kits, too.
