An Introduction to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Family

Jean Paul Gaultier

Within the world of horology, there is a hierarchy. Even within the upper echelon of luxury watches, some stand out as pioneers. One such brand is Jaeger-LeCoultre. While many watchmakers have perfected the art of the simple (read: extremely complicated, but not as complicated as it gets) mechanical watch, Jaeger-LeCoultre has consistently sought to push the boundaries.

Founded in 1833 in Le Sentier, the brand has developed over 1200 individual calibers and holds 400 unique patents. That’s part and parcel of introducing some of the most intricate watchmaking techniques in history. And along the way, some of these highly complex, almost otherworldly creations have stuck. Take the Reverso or Master Ultra Thin designs which are nothing short of icons in the watchmaking world.

But another design that really stands out as a hallmark of the brand is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris. This Swiss-made masterpiece is arguably the most timeless jewel in the JLC crown. The classic round dial sets the foundations for several variations ranging from complex chronograph layouts to stripped-back, minimal designs, all of which are underpinned by high-end Swiss calibers.

Take the Polaris Date, for example. This masterpiece was introduced in 2018 but can trace its roots back as far as 1968 when the Memovox Polaris was released. Maintaining many of the Memovox’s beautiful retro touches like a vanilla luminescent coating, the Polaris Date represents the enduring appeal of the design. Now, renewed for 2022, the Polaris Date is available with a gradient deep green dial.

Designed for optimum legibility with multiple textured finishes to the dial, the Polaris Date is perfect for the city. That said, with a water resistance prepped for diving as far as 200m, it’s just as comfortable in the ocean. Under the hood, the latest-generation Calibre 899 runs the show with 70 hours of power reserve. As a whole, the 2022 Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Date is a diving watch made for the modern day. Versatile, high-functioning, and steeped in luxury, it covers every angle.
